Science Week Trip for Upper School

Posted by Leicesterprep on 19th March 2012

Friday was very quiet in school as the children and staff from Upper School wer out on a trip to Snibston Discovery Park.

Here are some of the reports the children wrote on their return.

Kallum reported:

At Snibston we built a lift out of Knex.  I enjoyed this activity.

Tamera said:

first one of the women from Snibston came to talk to us and tell us about the wind turbines.  Then she told us what we had to do.  We had to use cardboard, a plastic bottle, some sand in the bottle and sellotape.  we had to build it –  first my group taped the cardboard windmill to the bottle and we had to see which one would have the least seconds.  My group took 8 secs.  Then we moved onto our next group.

Rahul’s view:

Our 3rd workshop was called Wild Things.  there we learned about animals and where they lived.  Some of the things we learned is that an owl pellet is the animal that the owl eats its fur or bone.  We learned some food chains.  This is one.

Fox – hedgehog – worms – leaves – sun.

As you can see, three very different workshops.  The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and hopefully learnt something as well!

The House Science Challenge 15th March 2012

Posted by Leicesterprep on 16th March 2012

Arun reports:

On 15th March in the afternoon Mr Hitchcock showed us some experiments.  One of the experiments was there was a cup upside down with three matches stuck into bluetac and he set it on fire and there was juice around the cup and all of the juice went back into the cup.  Another one was Georgina was lying on three chairs and Mr Hitchcock was holding a cup of water and a piece of card underneath.  Then he walked across Georgina but the water didn’t fall because before he drilled a little hole into it so it didn’t fall.  then there was a task to do who can build a tower made of paper straws.  whoevere had the tallest tower would win.  Victoria ended up winning and Chris, Tia and Kurren had the tallest tower.

The phases of the moon – Year 5 English

Posted by Leicesterprep on 18th October 2011

How did the moon come into being ? Why does it change shape? How big is the moon?

Did you know………….? If you placed the diameter of the moon on the earth it would fit on top of Australia, more or less!

How is an eclipse of the moon formed?

Which creatured jumped over the moon?

Let me know if you know the answers to any of these Year 5. I would be over the moon!

Slippery Science

Posted by Leicesterprep on 13th October 2011

Today, year 5 and 6 formed small groups and  investigated the surfaces around school in order to advise Mr. Cann as to which were potentially the most slippy. Armed with a newton meter, they measured each surface to create a report giving advice and recommendations. They used the new computer suite to generate accurate barcharts and letterheads and logos for their groups.

This investigation was part of their studt of friction which is in the science unit on ‘Forces in Action’.
